The name "Mumbai" comes from Mumbadevi, the patron goddess of the original Koli fishing community, though the British knew it as "Bombay" — likely a corruption of the Portuguese "Bom Bahia," good bay. Seven separate marshy islands were fused into one city through a century of land reclamation, then handed to the British Crown in 1661 as part of a Portuguese princess's dowry. It grew into the trading and industrial engine of British India, and today its Victorian Gothic and Art Deco skyline forms a single UNESCO World Heritage ensemble. This is also the city that made and unmade fortunes for the Tatas, gave the world Bollywood, and once housed a young law student named Mohandas Gandhi at the start of his career.
